A private family graveside service for Margaret M. Hokenson, age 91, will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa.   Pastor Kathy Lee Kramer will officiate at the service.   Mrs. Hokenson, a lifelong Tekoa resident, passed away Tuesday evening at Whitman Health and Rehab Center in Colfax from age related causes.   The family would like to thank the staff of LaDow Court and Whitman Hospital and Medical Center for their love and support for Margaret.

She was born Margaret Marie Gumm on September 2, 1925 at Tekoa to Walter and Esta O. (Cawrse) Gumm.   She attended schools in Tekoa, graduating from Tekoa High School in 1943.  Margaret then attended Beauty School in Spokane where she became a hairdresser.   She returned to Tekoa and operated a beauty salon for the next 4 years.

Margaret married Walter I. ‘DOC’  Hokenson on June 20, 1948 at Tekoa, and the couple made their home in Tekoa where Margaret was a homemaker and Walter worked for the Cash Hardware Company.   Margaret later worked as a cook for the Tekoa School District for 15 years.  She then worked in the office for the Tekoa Care Center for 20 years.   She retired in 2000.

She was a member of the Tekoa Garden Club, and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge.  Margaret enjoyed taking care of her flower gardens.  She also enjoyed watching Nascar races on TV.  Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her three children, Tim Hokenson (Laurie) of Farmington, WA, Linda Zehm (Bob) of Tekoa, and Don Hokenson of Spokane Valley, WA; six grandchildren, Brenda Hokenson, Angie Gerth, Samantha Hanson, Tanner Hokenson, Trevor Zehm, and Travis Zehm;  and 9 great grandchildren; Angie, Caitlyn, Keith, Haley, Quincy, Shelby, Gavin, Grady, and Jenna.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1981, a son Daniel, and two brothers, Henry and Virel Gumm.
