BARBARA D (WILLIAMS) MITCHELL

Funeral services for Barbara Mitchell, age 82, will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at the Evan Abraham Tribal Longhouse at DeSmet, Idaho.   A vigil service will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 7:00 P.M. at the longhouse.  Father Peter Byrne will officiate at the services and burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery at Worley, Idaho.  Mrs. Mitchell passed away Friday evening at her home in DeSmet surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born March 27, 1939 at Worley, Idaho to Ignance and Mary (Whatkins) Williams.  Barbara attended area schools and graduated from high school in 1957.  Barbara married Willie Mitchell and the couple lived in Spokane, Washington.  After her husband’s passing, Barbara moved to Los Angeles, California.  Barbara worked as a maid and as a caregiver prior to her retirement.  She returned to the reservation in 2006 where she lived in the retirement apartments in Plummer.  She moved to DeSmet two years ago.

She was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the Catholic Church.  She enjoyed spending time at the Coeur d’Alene Casino, crocheting, and working word puzzles.  She was an avid bingo player.

Survivors include her two children, Treva Mitchell of DeSmet, Idaho and Georgina Mitchell of Spokane, Washington, 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Matilda Matt of Tacoma, Washington, and Kathy Williams of Plummer, Idaho.
