I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Pat. I knew her from my years at LCSC. It was my very first day and I was scared to death. I was sitting at a table in World Literature class when she walked in and asked if the seat next to me was taken. I was so happy to meet her! I was going to college as a non-traditional student as was she. We found we had so much in common—the same age almost exactly, four children and a love for learning. We often met during lunch to analyze and talk about our readings. One day in class when discussing a story about young lovers, the professor asked how a person feels when in love. The students gave various answers that made it sound rather like being is love was an illness—trembling fingers, sweating hands, distraction, etc. Pat leaned over to me and whispered, “Gee I don’t remember that, do you?” At that we both got the giggles and because only we two had been married for so many years none of the young students understood our laughter. I admired her braveness when she continued her education after her husband passed away. That cannot have been easy. She often told me many stories of her childhood and it was wonderful to learn some of the Native American traditions that were combined with her Catholic upbringing. When I received a postcard from Buffalo and learned she was on her way to becoming a nurse practitioner, I was just delighted! She was an excellent role model for me and I ended up continuing on as well after graduating from LCSC. I am sad that I never got in touch with her after she returned and began work in Lapwai. The photo in the newspaper is perfect—it is exactly as I remember her during our years at LCSC. Pat made the world a better place in so many ways and my life is much richer for having known her. I know Heaven is rejoicing the have her there now.
May your wings fit just right, Pat! Thank you for sharing your life and your stories with me. You will live in my heart forever.

Pat was such a kind spoken caring provider at Nimiipuu Health. She took the time to teach a young single mom how to make sure I took a little time each day to tuck away for caring for myself so I could better care for my son. She Just cared and it always showed.
